How DO you get to heaven? Some believe that . . .
• All good people will live in heaven after they die on earth.
• If a person is generally good, or does enough good things for others during their lives, they will earn a place in heaven.
Do you agree or disagree?
According to research done by George Barna,* the public is divided on this - 54% agree and 39% disagree. 7% believe that they will go to heaven because God loves all people and will not let them perish.
Does it matter what we believe? People used to believe the world was flat. Or must we accept the truth? In the Bible, the Word of God, Jesus says, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me" (John 14:6).
Since Jesus is the Truth, and He says He is the only way to heaven, then what we think doesn't matter. We get to heaven through Jesus Christ ---
• not by attending a certain church
• not by trying to live a good life
• not by being baptized
• not by even giving a lot of money.
If we could buy or work our way into heaven, how much would be enough? Besides, the Bible says all our good works are as filthy rags in the eyes of a holy God (Isaiah 64:6). No matter how hard we try we will always fall short of reaching God's standard of perfection (Romans 3:23 ). I know I'm not perfect!! Alas, we are doomed (Romans 6:23).
But WAIT! God DOES love us. He says so in His Book. "For God so loved the world (hey, you're part of the world), that he gave his only begotten Son (Jesus) that whosoever (that's you) believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life (in heaven!!)" (John 3:16). It's only because of God's grace, His love that we don't deserve, that we have a way to heaven (Ephesians 2:8-9).
So, what we believe IS important if we believe the right things!
• Do you believe that your sin, the wrong that you do, has separated you from God and forfeited your chance of ever going to heaven?
• Do you believe that Jesus Christ loved you soooooo much that He was willing to die, to be punished for your sin, no matter how horrendous, instead of you? "Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us" (1 John 3:16).
Because Jesus is all-powerful Jesus did not stay dead. He came alive again! That's what the Easter celebration is all about! "Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures" (1 Corinthians 15:3b-4).
After spending some time here and being seen by many witnesses, Jesus returned to heaven to prepare a place for all those who believe in Him (John 14:1-3). Jesus said, "He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life" (John 5:24).
How do you get to heaven?
» Accept the fact that your sin has separated you from God forever.
» Believe that Jesus loves you and died in your place, shedding His blood for you.
» Confess to Jesus (just talk to Him like you talk to anyone else) your trust in what He did to save you from eternally being punished. Then thank Him for it!
Trust is believing -- not just head knowledge, but faith, acting on what you believe so that it makes a difference in your life.
If you were to die tonight, would you go to heaven? Quit depending on your own ability to get there and depend only on what Jesus did for you. He's the only way to heaven.
"Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved" (Acts 4:12).
Jesus said, "Him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out" (John 6:37b).
"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved" (Romans 10:13).
"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved" (Acts 16:31).
If you have made a decision to trust Jesus Christ, or need more help, we'd be happy to talk with you.
